I started this journey because I found myself at a scary stage of my life. The security of what I once knew was changing. I found myself out of shape, lonely, and spiraling down. I didn’t want to be seen in any public place without my shirt, and I have a 6 year old daughter who loves the water. I also didn’t have the energy to keep up. I decided after seeing the P90X commercial I would commit, and do the 90 days, and see what happens. I didn’t even look at my before video until I was 10-11 weeks into the program.
As I started the program, I couldn’t keep up, and I had to modify everything. In my 20s I was in pretty good shape, but I could never get, and keep the abs. If I did get abs, it was at the sacrifice of muscle. Tragedy struck my family 2 weeks into my program. It’s a kind of tragedy one never wants to go through with their child. I only mention this because it’s here that I could have quit, but it actually gave me more strength to continue. I knew I had to be strong for my daughter. Stronger than I ever was to face what was coming.
I was pretty religious with the program except for Yoga X. An hour and half was too long for me, or so I thought. It wasn’t until I tweaked my back on plyo that I gave Yoga another try. The moves were hard, but I actually felt relaxed, and limber afterwards. My views of Yoga X have been challenged, and I know have a different view of it. My nutrition I kept around 1600 calories a day. I would eat more on the weekends, and I am sure this cost me about 5 pounds I could have lost. If I rated my effort I would say I put 80-90% into the exercising, and 70-80% into nutrition and I still got good results.

Coach Wayne was great in helping me navigate the program, and cementing my goals. He always had time to answer my questions. I am now at the end of my second week of P90X. It was a hard choice because I was tempted to jump into Body Beast, but I felt I had so much still to gain from P90X. Now that I could do push up unmodified, and pull ups, I really feel my first round was really a warm up. Now I am doing P90X doubles, and I have added the Cardio X in my first week instead of fifth week. I have lost 4 pounds already in my first two weeks. My goal is to get down to 7-8% BF. Finish P90X, and then go on to Body Beast.
My advice to people just starting, or looking to hone in on better results is to focus on your nutrition, and stay consistent with your workouts. Even if you can’t bring the same intensity, you will see changes.
I see lots of ads that say “Results Not Typical.” What it really should say is “Effort Not Typical.”. Focus on the effort, and the results will come.
I started out at 217 pounds at 28.5% BF, and ended the 90 days at 195 pounds 13.8% BF. I am very happy with my results, and I don’t look at my late 30’s as the beginning of the end, but a beginning to more great things.
